IS STRIKE THE ONLY WAY?

I write with much sadness, wondering why this is so. If an organization needs something from government, is strike the only solution? Why is it that they do not think about those affected?

We the students are the ones suffering, we have paid the fees but there is no one to lecture us. Our days and time are being wasted. Are they going to extend the academic calendar or they would maintain it?

I therefore plead to the government to deliver the wishes of the lecturers, and UTAG to please continue lecturing. The students are the ones losing.

Congratulations to the Ghana Journalist Association, Award winners and all journalists for a good work done last saturday.

I was really impressed after watching the 15th GJA awards.

I would like to commend everyone but most especially Samuel Agyeman for winning the overall award. He should keep it up; more grease to his elbow.

I would also urge all reporters, newscasters and journalists to register and join the GJA. Being a reporter without being in GJA is like winking at a girl in the dark. You only know what you are doing but nobody else does.

Journalists should be accurate in their reportage to enable them maintain peace and stability in the country rather than causing fear and panic to the nation. They should also make sure that their problems raised have been solved by any authority who is in charge of that.
All I say is "Ayeekoo" to all journalists, we look forward to expect great things from them. Congrats

SWITCH OFF THE STREET LIGHTS DURING DAY TIME

I would like to know who is in charge of switching on and off the street lights.
I have realized that, the lights are always on during day time and sometimes on the whole day. Especially the street lights on the Ridge Area: 54 Obasanjo road, the lights have been on for a couple of time now.
This also contributes in a high percentage of the increment in electricity.
First of all, I would like to know who is or are in charge of that. I am sure that the problem is not only in Accra but also in every part of the Country. I pray that the situation being raised would be taken into consideration.

STOP UNNECESARY BURNING

It is good to burn certain unwanted susbstances but too much of that is very bad.
People burn their rubbish even on the pavement. This act is very risky. Khebab sellers are also contributors of such act.
Fumes from vehicles and chimneys of factories produces carbon dioxide(CO2) gases into the atmosphere. This has depleted our Ozone layer which prevents dangerous rays from coming down.
The destruction has resulted in strange conditions where man can simply not keep with the daily occurrences the weather brings. This has brought about harsh environmental conditions such as the unpredicted fall of snow in the European countries, the unreliable rainfall pattern and others.
Due to the human actions, the environment has lost it’s ability to sustain the life of humans and other living creatures.
Burning is very harmful to living things. As we give out oxgyen in order to obtain carbon dioxide and vice versa to the animals and plants, need to burn when necessary to avoid harmful air-borne diseases. There’s not a single day that someone would not burn, either rubbish or anything.
We should conserve our forest to help control the Chlorofluorocarbon(CFC) in the atmosphere.

BEWARE OF HIGH HEELS

If you love to be seen in high heels, then it is time to sit down and think twice. If a person regularly wears high heels, she will end up having change in the muscles and tendons of the legs. Ladies, especially models, beauty queens and corporate workers are mostly seen in high heels.
The change will be so dramatic that the person will experience pain when she wears flat heeled shoes or walks bare foot which most females have experienced it.
It is advisable to wear a mix of flat heels and high heels. Research indicates that it can cause multiple problems like bunions, spraining the ankles, hammertoes, pain in the lower back, knee and calf problems.
Wearing extremely high heels can cause the ligaments in the ankles to snap or it can cause fracture of the bones in the feet.
My advice to all females especially those who are fond of wearing high heels is that, they should reduce the often wearing of them.

The time we needed Asamoah Gyan most, made the whole Africa sad.

Black Stars have really made us proud. They have really done well.

Ghanaians and Africans should not be disappointed on last Friday’s match. Whatever happens is good and only God knows why that happened. It might be good for us all but we cannot see it.

Let us all cast our minds back to the beginning of the South Africa 2010 World Cup, has Asamoah Gyan missed any penalty? He scored almost all the goals that made us qualified. He also scored the victory goal when we played with the U.S.A. he has really done well. People should not criticize him on this.

God knows best that’s why He made that happened. We must all give thanks to Him.

For all we know, the next World Cup would be received by an African country, Ghana to be precise.

Therefore, Ghanaians must rather jubilate not mourn or criticize because what happened might be the best.

Well done Black Stars, Ghanaians should not worry.

KUDOS BLACKSTARS

Looking at a large group of people jubilating for the success of the Blackstars never ceased to amaze me.

Last Saturday’s victory was absolutely great.

The whole country was full of joy when Kevin Prince Boateng came up with the first goal. Hoping that it would be the end, silence invaded the country when USA also had their first goal. But thanks to our Maker, we had a victory goal. There is no doubt that most Africans had never stopped celebrating.

Indeed, Blackstars really made us proud, especially being the only African country to have qualified. We look forward to expect more victory from you. God be your guide for Friday’s match, I know victory is ours.

Congrats Blackstars.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO ONE GHANA PESEWA

Are we banned from using one pesewa? If not, then where is it? With a twinkle of an eye one pesewa is scares in the country. I would like to know if we are being prevented from using it.

I board a trotro recently and used it to pay mine fair. Surprisingly, the mate refused it saying, “We no longer use this coin”. I was very surprised. Most of the passengers were supporting him. Others said they would never receive it as a change to them. I had no option than to change it.

What if I had no money left with me? I really want to know if we no longer use it.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

A mother who cares

A mother who loves

A mother who shares

A mother who gives

That’s how are mothers are

Keeping us in their uterus for nine good months

Delivering us through pain. Some live and others die

Though others neglect their children, most of them with care genuinely cater for them

If time is due to celebrate them, then I would not hesitate to proceed.

I use this opportunity to congratulate our lovely mothers as well as mother Ghana

May they live to enjoy the fruit of their labor. God bless you mothers.

comparing and contrasting agenda setting and uses and gratification theory

Agenda setting and the uses and gratifications theory are two completely different ideas when looked at separately. However, when applied together, they both can be utilized as two intertwining functions of communication, and work as a team to successfully target audiences in that sense.
The uses and gratifications theory says that consumers use media to achieve and satisfy specific fulfillment needs. It looks at why people use media and what, exactly, they use it for. The four primary categories for which people make use of media in uses and gratification are: diversion, personal relationships, personal identity and surveillance. This theory regards people as active media users rather than passive, and it explains why audiences choose to be subjected to the media that they select.
Agenda setting is the theory that explains the influence that mass-media has on its audience, considering what the public prioritizes as “news-worthy”, and what media they direct their attention to. It’s the variable degrees of attention the mass media gives to certain ideas, issues or themes, which in turn lends them more or less significance. The news media is thus able to create public awareness and concern of salient issues. This theory has tremendous explanatory power because it explains what issues the public sees as important and predictive power because it realizes that people will lend importance to certain issues, if exposed to the same media.
Agenda setting can be used as a jumping off point for consumer research, which can be aid in the applied use of the uses and gratifications theory. By knowing your audiences “agenda”, an organization is able to create appropriate messages that their audience will congregate to, and what specific needs they seek to have satisfied. The uses and gratifications theory largely depends on research of what the consumers’ needs are, and how consumers apply them. This is especially important in agenda setting because this tactic relies on knowledge of what the public considers important, and what gratifications they are seeking to have satisfied. When applying agenda setting to the uses and gratifications theory, an organization is able to effectively direct their efforts to their audience’s specific needs, and thus create a successful mass communication message.

USES AND GRATIFICATION

One influential tradition in media research is referred to as 'uses and gratifications'. This approach focuses on why people use particular media rather than on content. In contrast to the concern of the 'media effects' tradition with 'what media do to people. uses & Gratification (U and G) can be seen as part of a broader trend amongst media researchers which is more concerned with 'what people do with media', allowing for a variety of responses and interpretations. However, some commentators have argued that gratifications could also be seen as effects. U and G helps audience to find out about relevant events and conditions in immediate surroundings, society and the world, seeking advice on practical matters or opinion and decision choices, satisfying curiosity and general interest, learning; self-education
and gaining a sense of security through knowledge

SURVEILLANCE

It is true that under surveillance, we derive knowledge from media content. But over exposure to the media could make us learn wrong things. For instance watching or listening to programs that has sex and violent pictures in them. Although the media reaffirms one's identity through its contents, it also leads one wrongly. Watching a character bearing the same behavior as u could be worsen if this behavior is bad. Because by watching and listening to programs we aspire to be like the characters whom we find ourselves in. There is also no doubt that watching and listening to media programs could relief you of your problems like films and music. As one watches or listens to get rid of a problem you realizes that the thing you are trying to rid yourself of are being repeated in that program. The media media content as a stimulant for conversation will not allow one have the appropriate effect of a program, since one's idea on a program differs from another. The surveillance need is based around the idea that people feel better having the feeling that they know what is going on in the world around them. One of the genres this is often applied to is news. By watching or reading about news we learn about what is happening in the world, and as the news is usually bad news, this knowledge leaves us feeling more secure about the safety of our own lives. This idea might seem a bit strange, that the more we know about tragedies the safer we feel, but sociologists argue that ignorance is seen as a source of danger, and so the more knowledge we have the safer we feel. When looking at the news it's easy to spot news items that give us this reaction.
U AND G
The theory have some limitations, such as its highly individualistic nature. It only takes into account the individual psychological gratification derived from individual media use.The social context of the media use is ignored. For example the environment as well as the state of the media user.

Despite the wide range of choices available to users, they have no control over the media and what it produces. What they consume is solely prepared by gatekeepers and may include their influences and perception. These gatekeepers add to,subtract from and organize issues, subjects and stories devoid of the control from the users.

With reference to the uses and gratification theory, the audience of the media create their own meanings of the messages and contents of the media. And the meanings they create out of this messages at times could be wrong due to emotions and this can lead to a long lasting negative effect on the audience since they are always consumers of the messages put across by the media.
One can also talk of how in dominant and powerless the media is as perceived by the direct effect theory. The media under the uses and gratification theory tend to competes with other forms of communication for selection, attention and use to gratify the audience needs and want. These are indeed some weaknesses of the uses and gratification theory.
It has explanatory power because it explains why most people prioritize the same issues as important. It also has predictive power because it predicts that if people are exposed to the same media, they will feel the same issues are important. Its meta-theoretical assumptions are balanced on the scientific side and it lays groundwork for further research. Furthermore, it has organizing power because it helps organize existing knowledge of media effects.

There are also limitations, such as media users may not be as ideal as the theory assumes. People may not be well-informed, deeply engaged in public affairs, thoughtful and skeptical. Instead, they may pay only casual and intermittent attention to public affairs and remain ignorant of the details. For people who have made up their minds, the effect is weakened. News media cannot create or conceal problems, they may only alter the awareness, priorities and salience people attached to a set of problems. Research has largely been inconclusive in establishing a causal relationship between public salience and media coverage.
Media Tenor compares the relationship between Reality and the Media's selection of Reality and the influence of these on Public perception. Its applied Agenda Setting research has proven that media shapes peoples' minds, especially those with no direct connection to newsworthy events. Consequently, topics not discussed in the media have proven to be irrelevant or less relevant to the public.

Agenda Setting Theory

According to the agenda-setting theory, first developed by Prof. Maxwell McCombs and Prof. Donald Shaw in their Chapel Hill study (1968), mass media sets the agenda for public opinion by highlighting certain issues. In studying the way political campaigns were covered in the media, Shaw and McCombs found that the main effect of the news media was to set an agenda, i.e. to tell people not what to think, but what to think about as opposed to persuasion or attitude change. Agenda setting is usually referred to as a function of mass media and not a theory (McCombs & Shaw, 1972).

the mass media is a huge phenomenon. Through the various different platforms, print or broadcast, the media is able to reach millions of people like no other force. Without the media, powerful speeches by politicians would affect no one, local events would remain local, and performances by great actors would be seen only by the people in the immediate audience. The media overcomes distances, and builds a direct relationship with the audience. Many sociologists have attempted to explore what effects this has on society, and how the media fits in to our social network. Through many programmes of research, including focus groups, surveys, questionnaires, clinical studies and plain hypothesising, a number of models describing the media's relationship with audiences have been drawn up.

WHAT I THINK ABOUT THE USES AND GRATIFICATION: HOW I USE THE MEDIA

We use the media to satisfy our needs and wants.
Needs: the basic necessities of life. something you cannot do without.
want: a form of human need that is shaped by our culture, individual preference and personality.
i use the media to be updated with the happenings around me and the world as a whole.
sometimes most of the things i watch, read or hear on the media influence me both negatively and positively.
for instance, i buy mirror on Saturdays because i am much interested in the center, the attire and styles sewed by designers. if i am interested in a particular attire, i sew some for myself or purchase it.
also, i listen to BBC news almost everyday and believe their sources of news are very professional and always true. when there was rumors that there would be earth tumor, until BBC said there would be nothing like that, i was peacefully sleeping.aftre listening to their news, i try to mutate them by talking like them.
the media also educate me with their fascinating programmes, example, brilliant science and maths quiz, what do you know?, Zain African challenge and talented kids. they also inform me through the news bulletin, counsels me with their inspirational hour with Ota Bill, Pastor Chris and others.
i am also addicted to certain programmes like second chance, storm over paradise and others...i even behave like some major characters who portray good roles.
the media has a lot of impact on others especially me.

PLAGIARISM IN JOURNALISM

Plagiarism is a severe misconduct. We have all heard about plagiarism in one field or the other. Songwriters, students, writers and historians plagiarize the work of others, but most disturbingly for journalists. They inform the publics about the events occurring around them but it seems journalists keep repeating incidence over and over again. There have been a number of cases in recent times of plagiarism among reporters. These incidences are serious because they damage the credibility not only of journalists directly involved but all journalists. Every writer knows that you do not take someone else’s writing and pass it off as your own. If you want to use someone else’s writing, you must first cite the source.

The problem is the temptation to plagiarize is greater than ever because of the internet which places a seemingly infinite amount of information just a mouse- click away. But the fact that plagiarism is easier than ever means reporters must be more vigilant than ever in guarding against it.

Plagiarism means claiming someone else’s work as yours by putting in your story without attribution or credit. If a reporter writes a story in a particularly distinctive or unusual way and another reporter essentially copies passages from that story into his own article, that’s an example of plagiarism.

Other journalists also copies people’s ideas. Sometimes, the media keep repeating past events.

In order to avoid plagiarism in journalism, journalists should do their own reporting. That way they avoid the temptation to steal information from another reporters story and will have the satisfaction of producing work that is entirely their own.

Also, once you have written your story, read it through several times to make sure you have not use any information that is not your own. Journalists should remember that, plagiarism is not always conscious act. Sometimes it can creep into your story without you being aware of it. Therefore, information being published must be accurate, no repetition and must be clear. This act will educate the public and to know more of what is happening.

Student journalists should also learn not to plagiarize when they start to report.

MOBILE PHONE PHONOMENA

It is amazing to see how mobile phone has affected the country. It has been like mosquito spreading malaria.

Though the use of mobile phones has really helped a lot, it also has some bad sides.

In ancient times, we need to write letters just to communicate with others. Now things have changed. The letter writing for it to be posted is no more in existence, the reason is WHY? a new invention, a phenomenon-“mobile phone”. It is now possible to converse directly with relatives and loved ones.

This invention has also created jobs for some unscrupulous personnel. They pick pocket other’s own. It is quite unusual to find out that the youth play massive contribution by indulging in this act. It is very appalling.

The obvious one is the drivers receiving calls while driving. It contributes highly to road accidents. Almost 80% of drivers practice such act. They can receive bad or shocking news and might loose control of the steer. The information can be so exciting that, they are unaware of what they are doing. This act slows down other vehicles.

The driver while receiving call at that time might not move very fast. I therefore plead to them not receive calls while driving or to park and answer the call.

The invention of the mobile phone has contributed both positively and negatively in our Ghanaian society.

VALENTINE PHENOMENON

Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine's Day — and its patron saint — is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.

Surprisingly, it would occur on Sunday. I hope the manner in which it is being celebrated would change a little. Though others might celebrate it in a different way, so would others go to church? I believe priests would take time to elaborate more on it. People should show love to all most especially their family. Disputes must be solved and people should live in harmony.

Happy Valentines Day

NEWS IN FRENCH

Aside English, the next commonest language spoken by two thirds of the world is French. Ghana is being surrounded by francophone countries and we ought to take French language very seriously. If possible it should be made compulsory in all schools from creche to university.

French is an interesting language, though some how difficult to learn it would be easy when it is started at the basic level.

GTV has started reporting news in French. That is very good of them. It would make the francophone peoples feel more welcomed in the country. They would also know more of what is happening. It would also throw more lights on journalists to take their French education very seriously because they can get vacancy through that.

It is my wish that all the media would broadcast news in French alongside the English. GTV should not stop but continue. Bravo GTV.

It is amazing the number of soap operas being shown on our media of late. They are all quite interesting, educative and entertaining. Passions blew the nations with it fascinating episodes, not knowing others were yet to explode. Mexicans are genius about soap operas. Their extravagant episodes like Cuando seas mia, My three sisters, Anastasia, Juana, Camila and others. They did really entertain us especially Second Chance.

Almost everyone, mostly the youth rushed to watch it. Missing it like loosing someone important.

Interviews I conducted show that, about 82% had more interest in Second Chance than any other series. It would be very difficult for any other novella to replace it. Storm over paradise is also another interesting Mexican soap opera but the time it is being viewed on air makes it quite difficult for others especially workers to watch it.

Ghanaians can also air such nice series and even better than the Europeans. What happened to tentacles and others?

Television stations should not hesitate to broadcast any Mexican soap operas because that is the main source of entertainment.

FACEBOOK ADDICTION

Cannot imagine the number of people involved in facebook all over the world. I am no exception.

I wonder if there is a magnet attached to it that makes it difficult to close that tab. I went to the school cafe to research into mine assignment, I did not know what happened, all of a sudden, I logged on to facebook forgetting my assignment. After chatting for hours, I realized I had wasted which could have been used for other useful purpose.

I would not be surprise if most people aside with me. Most students access the net and the first thing they log on is facebook. Most people are addicted to it than most other things. Any solution? What should be than about it?

SWITCH OFF ENGINES WHEN BUYING FUEL

Day in and day out, we neglect certain important things. Forgetting our lives are more important than any thing.

Drivers, especially the commercial ones do not switch off their engines when buying fuel. This act is very dangerous. The vehicles can explode and precious lives being lost.

Passengers should not hesitate to query drivers who do not switch off their engines and must do well to report them to the nearest police station.

Also, those in charge of selling it to drivers must also see to it that, there are off before given it out. If such act is abolished, then the country would progress and we all live in peaceful harmony.

HYPORDERMIC NEEDLE THEORY

Hypodermic Needle Theory also known as The Magic Bullet Theory, the rational mind was a mere facade, incapable of resisting powerful messages. People have no ability to screen out or criticise these messages. The messages penetrate to their subconscious minds and transform how they think or feel.
For the hypodermic needle, it changes the minds and perception of the individual. For propaganda case like this, a person can communicate to the masses through the media, convince or persuade or influences its viewers or listeners to confine with his or her decision.

MINE OWN VIEWS ABOUT THE EFFECT OF THEORIES (MEDIA)

Theory is a general principles that explains facts or idea that is the starting point for argument or investigation.
Taking a look at the effect theories of mass communication, i would consider how people are being influenced by the media.
The media is the inter-mediator that carries information, news and other activities from a source to a larger number of audience which are unseen and identified. The media should then spread out good and quality information to its responsible audience. This is because, the content of the programme can affect ones behavior.
Assuming what it entails talk about educative things, this would totally change the behavior and the thinking of the masses. They would end up knowing much through the media. For example, if they educate its audience about the importance and purpose of resarch and reading, this would enlighten the thinking thougtsof its audience.
For the aspects where it talks or shows certain materials which are not accepted in our locality like pornographic materials, it also affects our behavior. Especially, the youth would be exposed to it and begin to practice it. In as much as it affects the youth,it can be a benefit to the older ones(married couples). Therefore, the time in which it is being viewed can be changed to late in the evening where most people are asleep and the older ones have closed from work glancing through the various channels.
The media can have effects on us psychologically and emotionally. It also changes our perceptions. For example, it can educate us on love, and we can show this by showing love and care to one another, example, families.
It has affected us directly through our thinking and behavior, and indirectly when our friends adapt our characters we portray with the help of the media.
In a nutshell, the media should not be looked at only its negative sides but as well as the positive sides like the spread of information, educative programmes and the entertaining aspects.
